| Putting fire out: Hard Work |
|
| Blaze had hot-spots on forest's floor. |
Tuesday, November 10, 2009 -
A woods fire of unknown origin burned for hours before being discovered in the 600 block of County Road S. 700 West.
Bargersville Community Fire Department was called to the area at 5:18 p.m. A neighbor saw flames in the woods and smoke drifting throughout the rural area.
Trafalgar firefighters were called to assist.
The fire had burned through brush near a harvested farm field a few hundred yards off the paved road. The flames were spread across several acres in a hilly area adjacent to the field. Fortunately, the fire did not ignite much of the heavy timber because it had moved quickly across the forest's floor.
Arriving firefighters negotiated a perimeter lane around the field with smaller trucks carrying limited amounts of water. A tanker truck carrying additional water was stationed along the paved county road.
Using water, rakes and flapper tools, designed to smother the wind-driven ground fire, allowed firefighters extinguished all visible fire by 6:30 p.m.
It is unknown how the fire started. However, hunters had been seen in the area earlier.
